Respect In Sport Program

May 23, 2014

Dear Parents, I am sure that most of you have heard of the Respect-In-Sport Parent Program. The following document and links will provide you with further details about the program.

The program is mandatory for all parents/guardians of players (under the age of 18 years) registering for the 2014-2015 season. No player (under the age of 18 years) will be rostered to ANY team until this program has been undertaken by a parent/guardian. This course currently does not have an expiry date and only needs to be taken once.

Please complete the program by July 15, 2014. Once you have completed the program, send an email to your team manager indicating you have completed the program and your manager will forward the information to Sue King so the player can be rostered.

IMPORTANT: When beginning the course it is important to open “Child Management” and enter all children you have registered in minor hockey. All children must be listed here in order to associate your certification with your child’s Hockey Canada record. To aide with connecting your certification to your child’s record, children’s names should be entered using the same spelling as when they were registered with Hockey Canada.

INTRODUCTION:

Parents play a crucial role in the development of your athletes. Respect in Sport is an effective and informative online training program for parents of active children. This one hour online certification program reinforces the role of a parent in activities of young athletes. This unique certification program complements Respect in Sport for Coaches/Activity Leaders by reinforcing a parents role in a child or youth’s activities, encouraging positive sport behaviours, and providing insight into the various roles other individuals (such as coaches and officials) play.

This program is about empowering parents to ensure the safety of their children, encourage positive and effective communication, and to enhance a child’s fun and camaraderie of the activity.

The number one reason cited for coaches, managers and officials of all ages leaving a sport is unacceptable parent behaviour. It is our hope that the Respect in Sport Parent Program will help assert proper parent behaviours in order to create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved.

The Respect in Sport Program for Parents is a unique, in-depth 1 hour online program geared to providing the parent with information on how to evaluate and understand:

  • Parental influence over a child
  • Coach and leader roles in sport
  • Role of the parent and coach in ensuring a child’s enjoyment of a sport
  • Protecting your child when outside of your immediate control
  • Concussion awareness and Return to Play guidelines
  • Long-Term Player Development

Frequently Asked Questions:

How is Respect in Sport implemented? The Respect in Sport Parent Program is presented as an online curriculum and includes audio/visual presentations.

Is there a fee for this course and how long does it take? The course costs $12 per family and takes 1 hour to complete.

What equipment is required to complete the program? All that is required to complete the Respect in Sport curriculum is a computer, an Internet connection, and speakers or a headset. Optional equipment includes a printer to print out your certificate of completion if required.

What if I don’t have a high-speed connection? The course is designed to be accessible from any computer using dial-up or high-speed internet. Once registered, the user experience is the same at any speed.

What if I don’t know anything about computers? Through extensive research and development, the program was designed, first and foremost, to be user friendly. There is also an on-line “Help” feature and a 1-800 support line available.

Is there a paper version of the program? No. Respect in Sport gives you ongoing access to the course once you’ve completed it, as an online resource.

You are still required to take the Parent version of the course because it has different content that is specific to parents.
