Novice AAA Petes’ first-rate defensive pairings help secure a shutout tie of the Clarington Toros on Saturday, January 9
The Canadian Hockey Enterprises, Russelle Chiropractic Novice AAA Petes battled the Clarington Toros to a 0-0 tie Saturday, January 9th in Bowmanville. The high scoring Toros, second in the league in scoring, were blanked for only the second time this season, with both shutouts coming at the hands of the Petes. Peterborough started slowly but built momentum through the second period and controlled the play in the third, just missing the go-ahead goal on several occasions.  Despite not scoring, the Petes forwards used their speed effectively, forechecking hard in the offensive zone and producing relentless back pressure in the neutral and defensive zones.  Defencemen  Ryland Harvey, Graydon Jones and Holden Rutherford held the blue line, forcing turnovers and keeping the Toros well to the outside. Quinn Jacobs, Zach Russelle and team captain Nathan Gerelus were strong on the puck, moving it quickly and efficiently out of their end all game. On the few occasions the Toros were able to generate some quality chances, goalie Lewis Brocklehurst was solid in the net including several outstanding close-in stops to preserve the tie. The Petes play next Wednesday night versus Oshawa in Peterborough.
